About the Artist.
WORK Julie Dupre Buckner is an American artist working as a painter, portrait artist, book illustrator, and teacher. Previously, she worked full time as a designer and illustrator, creative director for an independent jeweler, and as staff illustrator for an ad agency. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design, she continued her art studies in Italy. Mrs. Buckner's work, mostly portraits, is in private collections through out the southern US, New York and California. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America and the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators. She has illustrated six children's picture books for Pelican Publishing Company and two for River Road Press, not including paperback book covers. Mrs. Buckner is resides in Plaquemine, Louisiana.
HONORS Mrs. Buckner's children's book illustrations have been on display at the Irving Art Center Museum in Texas as part of a group show. Her paintings and portraits were featured in a solo show at the Children's Museum in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She has appeared in articles in the Baton Rouge Advocate, 225 Magazine, the Lafayette (IN) Journal & Courier, the Vicksburg (MS) Post, and Town Favorites Magazine. Her illustration work has garnered ADDY awards and her paintings have placed in numerous local and regional shows. Buckner was selected as the 2013 featured artist for the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Art Auction. Army Camels: Texas Ships of the Desert, illustrated by Buckner, has won several awards, including a 2013 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award. Voices of the Western Frontier was a 2016 finalist for the annual WWA Storyteller's Award.
GIVING Over the years the artist has supported Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, OLOL Children's Hospital, the Children's Miracle Network, Junior Achievement, Baton Rouge Symphony, and Louisiana Public Broadcasting. She also supported the Bulldogs Unleashed project, benefiting Baton Rouge High School.
